Introduction
CNRS/INSU and Ifremer Ferrybox systems collects water quality data from sensors installed onboard ships sailing along fixed routes.
Since 2010, CNRS/INSU Station Biologique Roscoff and Ifremer-Brest have installed ferry box systems onboard two Brittany Ferries ships
(MV Armorique and Pont Aven) for operational monitoring of coastal areas and shelf seas of the Western European shelves (Western Channel,
Celtic Sea and bay of Biscay). Such systems have been developped during the EU Science Framework 5 funded project “FerryBox” from 2002 to 2005.
The “FerryBox” project enabled the cooperation of 11 organisations for establishing a coordinated use of commercial ferry ships
for the collection of scientific data (
http://www.ferrybox.org/eu_project_ferrybox/).
Since this project, ferry box has been commonly used to describe automated instrument packages installed on ships of opportunities
for the monitoring of the marine environment.
